Before we know it, the New England Patriots or Atlanta Falcons will be crowned Super Bowl champions. I cannot wait for this game to be over so that he offseason can truly start. The Eagles will definitely make some moves, sign players and draft the future in order to retool, tweak and build what is hopefully a better and improved roster for the coming season.
There’s a lot of work that Howie Roseman and Joe Douglas need to do during the course of free agency and the draft to build this Eagles team into a future playoff contender. They’ll making decisions on or around these 2017 NFL offseason dates.
February 15th – This is the first day teams can place the franchise tag on players.
February 28th thru March 6th – The NFL Scouting Combine will take place in Indianapolis, IN.
March 1st – The last day for teams can place the franchise tag on players.
March 7th thru March 9th – Free agency COMMUNICATION between clubs, agents and players begins. Teams, general managers, etc. will be allowed to enter into contract negotiations with players who will become Unrestricted Free Agent on March 7th at 4:00 PM EST. However, a contract cannot be signed with a new club until 4:00 PM EST on March 9th.
March 9th – The new 2017 league year begins.
- FREE AGENCY BEGINS at 4:00 PM EST.
- Teams must submit qualifying offers to their Restricted Free Agents with expiring contracts and to whom they desire to retain a Right of First Refusal/Compensation.
- All 2016 player contracts will expire at 4:00 PM EST.
- The trading period for the year begins at 4:00 PM EST after all 2016 contracts have expired.
Needless to say, March 9th is huge and critical day for every pro football fan and NFL team.
April 17th – Teams with returning head coaches may begin offseason workout programs.
April 21st – The deadline for Restricted Free Agents to sign offers sheets.
April 27th to April 29th – The NFL Draft will take place in Philadelphia, PA.
From now until the end of April seems like an eternity. It does every year.
