I’m not aware of one hockey fan who doesn’t enjoy the allure and concept of outdoor games at the country’s most notable football and baseball fields. It was beyond fun to watch the Flyers play at Boston’s Fenway Park in 2010 and host a home game across the street from the Wells Fargo Center at Citizens Bank Park in 2012.
It’s been reported that the Flyers have had preliminary discussions about playing a regular-season game at Penn State University’s Beaver Stadium. Flyers president Peter Luukko confirmed this Wednesday, and the hope is this will be a Pennsylvania rival game with the Pittsburgh Penguins. While we haven’t heard much from the Pens camp to date, Penn State University is extremely interested and excited about this prospect. This plan better come to fruition for Flyers fans and Pennsylvania hockey fans, in general.
What a great concept; eastern Pennsylvania versus western Pennsylvania. Meeting halfway right off of I-80 in central PA at the most beloved stadium within our boarders (and likely the most beloved in the nation). As a Penn State alum and having attended countless Penn State football games, this idea has me giddy. I would venture to say this idea has many of my Pittsburgh friends excited as well, especially those who are also Penn State fans. Outdoor games seem to be “all the rage” right now.
There are six outdoor hockey games planned for next season including events at Dodger Stadium, Yankee Stadium (twice), Soldier Field, and Michigan Stadium. We could certainly use another, and one right here in Pennsylvania. Dear Flyers and Penguins front offices: please get this done!
